Rifle Redemption

After getting my buck Sara and I switched spots for the next couple of nights. Both of which yielded sightings of nice bucks and if it wasn’t for a small cherry tree. Sara would’ve had a big one.

After the disappointment of that evening, we took the next night off but seeing a lot of deer we decided to return to the spot yet again on the following night.

The snow had all melted and although we were seeing around 30 deer a night, I had a feeling that wouldn’t be the case as we overlooked a thick bottom blanketed in brown leaves.

It was a slow night and with every passing minute, I wasn’t so sure we were even going to see a deer.

Finally, I thought I caught a flash down on a small point, I looked with the binoculars and found a spike moving across the hump. Six more bucks followed him with 4 of them being of the spike variety. The 5th buck in line looked to be legal and as Sara got behind the gun, I could tell the last buck was legal.

I told Sara the 7th one was the one she wanted and as they began coming out of the thick section of trees below only 2 deer came out before I saw the first legal buck followed by the 10 points rack coming through the brush.

They weren’t in a hurry but were walking just fast enough across a trail that I knew before too long they were once again going to vanish.

I stopped them and Sara found him in the scope as he began stride again. I once again stopped him and as he stopped, he was standing in the exact spot the buck had been a couple nights prior.

My stomach about dropped when I saw that he too was behind that small cherry. But this time as the 300 barked the buck flopped over and the rest of the herd scattered. We celebrated and made our way down to the buck who wasn’t as lucky as the first one standing in his tracks.
